With a BSc (Physics) Phil offers 30 years’ experience in recruitment in Australia Europe and the US. Phil is a former Managing Director of Robert Half (Australia) and Ex Michael Page (London and Sydney).

How long have you been recruiting executives?
“I have been in the recruitment sector for over 30 years. I graduated in Physics in May 1988 and had no fixed idea what career I wanted to pursue. It therefore seemed only logical to spend my time advising other people what they should be doing with their careers and so I started recruiting in June 1988.”
Where have you worked?
“Initially, I worked in Eton on the banks of the River Thames just across from Windsor Castle. From there I moved up to Holborn in Central London with Michael Page where I helped to set up a new division for them. This subsequently became the West London Office for Michael Page.
In 1996, Michael Page transferred me from London to Sydney. Here, I set up another new division that subsequently became their North Shore office. In 1998, I was asked by Robert Half International to set up and run Australia and New Zealand. They had no offices outside North America and Europe at that time. By the time that I left the group in 2002 we had 130 staff across four offices and six brands in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland.
Q Consulting Group was established in January 2003 to provide a more personalised and specialised service to clients and candidates with a particular focus in the small to medium sized enterprise environment.”
How many successful candidates have you had?
“Over the years I have interviewed approximately 7,500 individuals.”

How do you see the industry changing?
“In 30 years the industry has changed a great deal, particularly the technology available today is incredible compared to when I started. The most important factor that has not changed at all in all these years is this: To succeed in business you must have the best people. Even more so when the economy is weak. This is not easy considering that supply of these individuals is limited and finite and demand varies
